Situation
During a VMM camera upgrade at a large retailer’s product testing facility in Atlanta, the required connector panel wasn’t shipped with the unit. This was more than just a logistics problem — because the camera head moves up and down to focus, without a correctly fitted panel, the USB cable exits under tension, introducing stress that can cause camera skew or rotational drift over time, nullifying internal calibration adjustments. On a system holding micron-level tolerances, that quickly invalidates every measurement it produces.
Solution
Rather than wait for an overnight part, I fabricated a new replacement panel from raw aluminum stock on-site — cutting and drilling the blank to spec, mounting the DC power and USB connectors, and completing install in unit. Total additional fabrication time: 1.5 hours.
Outcome
Install was completed same day. Cables routed without tension, system passed full operational verification, no drift or camera skew risk. The repair was documented by myself, forwarded to my supervisor and later contributed to a parts kitting recommendation for future installs.
